Trump’s Next Target: Working H-1B Spouses ?

With each passing day, the life of immigrants in USA is turning out to be a nightmare because of the proposed reforms targeting non-Americans. Now, working spouses of H-1B visa holders are likely to be the next target as per latest reports. The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed a plan to stop giving work permits to certain spouses of H-1B visa holders.

This step aims to change a 2015 rule that allows spouses on H-4 dependent visas to get work authorization while waiting for permanent residency. If approved, the new policy would return to the older rule where H-4 spouses were not allowed to hold jobs in the United States.

The news has sparked strong reactions across the country. Supporters of the move claim that taking away work authorization from foreign dependents open up around 600,000 jobs for American citizens in the coming weeks.

So, the families on H-1B visas are now in fear of losing a key source of household income and career growth if this becomes a rule very soon. Many spouses of H-1B visa work to double the income sources of the family for a better living.

However, experts claim that proposal is currently listed as a long-term action and is not an active rule yet. Before this comes into force, the government must publish a formal proposed rule, open a public feedback period, and issue a final decision.
