Nani’s Paradise is the latest to become victim of the ongoing social media war. There is a growing trend on Telugu social media, unnecessary fights between some people from Andhra and Telangana taking a dig at each other with reference to cultural differences.
The discussion started after the release of the folk song remix “Yesha Nagula Kattameedha” from The Paradise. What should have been a discussion about the song, its music and its cultural flavour soon turned into social media arguments between youngsters from the two states.
Such fights are not new. Whenever a folk song or a song using a particular regional slang is released in a mainstream Telugu hero’s film, social media often sees debates about which region has better language, slang or culture. But these arguments are slowly becoming more aggressive.
People are now fighting over the way Telugu is spoken in Andhra and Telangana, while also comparing the cultures of the two states. In the process, many seem to forget one basic point — both Andhra and Telangana are part of the larger Telugu identity.
Regional differences in slang, traditions, food and culture are natural. In fact, these differences have made Telugu cinema richer over the years. There is no need to treat one region’s culture as better than the other.
At a time when Telugu cinema is reaching a global audience, these unnecessary language and regional wars are sending the wrong message.
Filmmakers like SS Rajamouli and Sandeep Reddy Vanga are taking Telugu cinema to international markets and creating a much bigger identity for the industry.
Telugu cinema is growing beyond regional boundaries. Social media discussions should also move in the same direction.
Healthy debates about films, songs and regional representation are welcome. But turning every folk song into a fight between Andhra and Telangana only creates unnecessary division.
Telugu cinema can celebrate different Telugu cultures without making them compete against each other. The language may have different accents and slangs, but the identity remains Telugu. Meanwhile, Paradise is all set for release on Sep 24.
