The OTT platforms have become popular in India in the last couple of years, all thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are the primary source of entertainment for the audiences right now.
A lot of people are still not stepping into the theatres and are waiting for films to get released on OTT platforms. On the flip side, there are many other films that opted for a direct digital release, by skipping the theatrical release.
There are many streaming platforms in our country. Do you know which one has the most number of subscribers? It is Disney+ Hotstar. This Star-owned OTT platform enjoys more than 46 million subscribers in India.
Amazon Prime India enjoys a subscriber base of around 19 million. Zee5 and Netflix have around 6.5 million and 5.5 million subscribers respective across the country.
This means that Hotstar’s subscriber base is higher than the combined total subscriber base of many other popular OTT platforms. Such is the popularity of this platform among Indians.
Streaming Indian cricket content is one of the major factors that brought such a huge subscriber base for Hotstar. It also streams the content of all TV channels owned by the Star Network. We have to see if any other platform comes up with equally good strategies in the future to match Hotstar’s subscriber base.
