Veteran actress Jamuna passed away due to age related ailments. Her age was 86. She is survived by son Vamsee Juluri and daughter Sravanthi. She passed away in Hyderabad at her residence in Banjara Hills.
Jamuna was born in Hampi of Karnataka. Her original name was Jana Bai. Her parents were Nipping Srinivasa Rao and Kowsalya Devi. Jamuna’s parents had an inter-caste marriage which was rare in that era. While her father was a Brahmin, Jamuna’s mother was from Vaisya community.
Started her career as a stage artist in school, Jamuna had learnt vocal music and harmonium with the encouragement of her mother. Dr. Garikipati Raja Rao watched her stage show Maa Bhoomi and gave her the opportunity to act in his film Puttillu in 1952.
Jamuna went on to act in over 200 films in Telugu, Tamil and other south Indian languages. Jamuna also acted in Hindi movies. She won the Filmfare award for her performance in Milan (1967) as Best Supporting Actress. This is the Hindi remake of Mooga Manasulu (1964).
Jamuna’s husband Juluri Ramana Rao was a zoology professor in SV University whom she married in 1965. The couple have two children. Her husband died on 10 November 2014 aged 86 due to cardiac arrest.

Jamuna’s mortal remains will be kept for public display at Film Chamber today till evening. Her last rites would be performed today evening at Jubilee Hills Maha Prasthanam.
