The song ‘Natu Natu’ from the RRR film has made history by winning the Oscar in the original song category. Furthermore, it has gained international attention quickly and is continuing to trend worldwide, while still running in the theatres of this island nation.
Legendary director SS Rajamouli’s RRR is making a splash in Japan, shattering the record set by Rajinikanth’s Muthu two decades ago. It surpassed previous box office hits such as Baahubali 2, 3 Idiots, English Vinglish, Saaho and Magadheera. Undoubtedly, RRR has firmly established itself as the top movie in Japan. December of last year saw RRR take the highest-grossing film spot. Breaking the all-time record that had remained unbeaten since Rajnikanth’s Muthu, a film released two decades prior, RRR has now clocked an impressive 200 days run at the box office.
21 October 2022 saw the big release of RRR Cinema in Japanese theatres. Suffice it to say it was a huge success, the movie ran for an impressive 200 days in cinemas, far exceeding its initial run time expectations, and earned over 195 million Japanese yen (which is equal to Rs 119 crores in Indian currency). It was so popular that more than 1 million viewers watched the film across 44 different cities, where 209 regular and 31 IMAX theatres were situated. It really goes to show just how highly this movie was regarded by audiences all over Japan!
Its lasting success is still remembered today as one of the biggest accomplishments of Indian Cinema.
