Karnataka: Movie Ticket Price Will Not Exceed 200 Rupees

In a shocking development, the government of Karnataka has introduced a new police by restricting the price of movie tickets. As per the latest government order, the ticket cost will not exceed 200 rupees under any circumstance. This means that the film ticket price will not exceed 200 rupees even in multiplexes.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has announced this during the budget sessions and it will be a big blow to the producers and the film industry in the state. Karnataka is always known for dynamic ticket pricing in multiplexes but it will not happen anymore.

Over the years, Bengaluru has seen a steep rise in ticket prices, with some movie tickets selling for over ₹600 during initial release days. Often times, the producers would also request for the hikes. The state government has been considerate so far but decided to standardize the ticket prices across the state to make cinema affordable for the viewers.

Recently, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar made controversial statements about the film industry. At a public event, he remarked that film productions depend on government approvals for shooting and that he knew “where to tighten the nuts and bolts” when necessary. Shivakumar also expressed disappointment over the lack of participation from the film fraternity in the Bangalore International Film Festival (BIFF).

This new policy implemented by the government of Karnataka would benefit the general audiences and moviegoers but a big blow to producers. If the governments in other states also implement the same, it would be tough for the producers to mint in hundreds of crores in the first week of its release.

On one side, it could hamper the genuine producers’ concerns but on the other side, it also allows the filmmakers to retrospect as everyone in the current times is asking for a ticket price by delivering below par content. Mostly, cinema is a form of entertainment and if this could bring a lot more people to theatres, then, we could sense the golden era coming back.
