Karthik Subbaraj is one of the prolific filmmakers of Tamil cinema. However, he doesn’t have the same success rate in Telugu. For some reason, Karthik Subbaraj’s western-infused storytelling and picturization don’t gel well with the Telugu audiences.
Apart from Pizza, his other films like Petta and Jigarthanda Double X failed to resonate with the Telugu audience, whereas Mahaan managed to connect with both the youth and the mass audience. Now, he is coming up with his latest film, Retro, featuring Suriya in the lead role. More than Suriya’s form, it is Karthik Subbaraj’s track record which is worrying Telugu trade circles regarding this movie.
Retro’s trailer was released recently and gained a good reception in Tamil. However, Telugu audiences couldn’t connect to it well. Be it the filmmaking style or the dialogues, the trailer couldn’t just engage the audience to an expected level. Thus, the film entirely depends on Suriya’s stardom to pull audiences to the theatres.
A good word of mouth is necessary for Retro to do well in Telugu, as it is clashing with Nani’s anticipated film HIT 3. So, we have to see if Karthik Subbaraj breaks his jinx and delivers a big hit in Telugu this time.
