Suriya’s struggles: Are directors letting him down?

Suriya has always been seen as one of the most respected actors in the industry. Whether it’s his acting, his clean public image, or his social work through the Agaram Foundation, people genuinely like him. But when it comes to films, he’s been going through a rough patch for a while now.

Fans had high hopes that Kanguva would bring him back into the blockbuster zone. Everyone knows how much effort he put into it—he gave it everything, both physically and mentally. But unfortunately, despite all the hard work, the film didn’t work. His faith in director Siva didn’t pay off.

Now, Retro has hit the screens, and it’s the same story again. Suriya trusted director Karthik Subbaraj more than the script. He liked the director’s style and jumped in. The film was shot quickly, and everything seemed smooth. But when the movie released, the response was underwhelming. The storytelling felt outdated, with a mix of old-school themes and a dragging screenplay. Even though the film had top actors, their roles were barely impactful.

It feels like Karthik Subbaraj made this movie just to prove he’s still relevant—but it didn’t click. Fans are now disappointed again, wondering when Suriya will finally get a solid hit.

His next movie, Suriya 45, directed by RJ Balaji, is almost done. There’s cautious optimism around it. But more attention is on Venky Atluri’s upcoming project. He’s known for films like Sir and Lucky Bhaskar, and this one is said to be a well-written vintage drama that might suit Suriya perfectly.

If these next two films work out, Suriya could finally get back on track. Otherwise, it’s going to get even tougher to rebuild the market he once ruled.
