The Hindi film industry has been lying low for a long time. Barring a few hits like Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan, Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree 2, and Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, almost all the big-budget entertainers featuring top-tier stars ended up being massive duds at the box office.
Several filmmakers and trade analysts openly urged Bollywood filmmakers to introspect and reinvent themselves to survive the pan-India storm from the Southern film industry. Acclaimed Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap has been blasting Bollywood and its ecosystem for a long time.
Now, it’s Anurag’s ex-wife and popular Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin’s turn to criticize the Hindi film industry. In a latest podcast, Kalki said Bollywood is in recession and highlighted the need for creative stimulation. She went on to explain that the lack of fresh and compelling stories is a major reason behind this slump.
Koechlin opined that Bollywood insiders are struggling to understand what is working and what isn’t due to internal confusion. She further said creative filmmakers are being constantly fired and rehired by production houses in a desperate bid to find a success formula. Kalki points out that the creative stagnation has crippled top-tier filmmakers to aspiring actors, with several projects being shelved or delayed. She also condemned the producers’ desperation to cash in on a star’s craze by shelling out huge amounts of remuneration with dismal content in hand.
