Just days before the release of highly anticipated film Thug Life, a controversy has erupted around Kamal Haasan that could affect the film’s reception. During a promotional interview, Kamal made remarks suggesting that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. This statement has not gone down well with Kannada cultural groups and political leaders.
The backlash was immediate. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded strongly, saying Kamal lacked basic knowledge about history and language. Several Kannada associations are now calling for a boycott of Kamal Haasan’s films.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Thug Life, a crucial film for both Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam, who are looking to bounce back after a string of flops. With the film set to release on June 5, the growing controversy could impact its performance in Karnataka.
