Actors Today Are Overthinking: Karan Johar on Multi-Starrers

Multi-starrer films used to be a great trend back in the olden days of cinema. But over time, this trend witnessed a decline, and now, we hardly see a couple of multi-starrers every year, featuring big stars.

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar is one of those directors who made multiple multi-starrers back then, like Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. He says that making multi-starrers is very difficult these days because actors of this generation overthink and overanalyze too much.

In a recent interview, Karan said, “It’s very difficult. Firstly, you have actors who have their own strategies, thoughts, and ideologies. You also have people advising them. In those days, no one thought so much. Everyone said, ‘yaar karlenge’.

When Shah Rukh accepted K3G, he didn’t read the script. He knew that there were other actors in the film, but he was like it’s Karan’s film and he will do it. But today, people are overthinking, overanalyzing, overexpecting and over everything. Therefore, you are not overachieving.”

Karan went on to say that even if he tells the current generation of the advantages of doing multi-starrers and how easy it is to do them, they will change their mind after going home and listening to their advisors, like friends, family members, better halves, and even fans on social media. He opined that good old-fashioned conviction needs to come back, where people make decisions on the go without overthinking.

He went on to say that making multi-starrers was easy back then, but these days, it has many hurdles, including lead stars demanding exorbitant remunerations, without realising that the box office is a tough and challenging part of the industry’s existence right now.

Meanwhile, Karan shared his excitement about this year’s biggest multi-starrer film, War 2. He said, “The biggest film of the year is War 2, and it has Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR in the same frame. That is like bang for the buck. Two of the biggest stars from two of the biggest cinemas coming together, which is like beyond a wishlist to have. It doesn’t happen. To bring two lead actors or two lead actresses in one film is just difficult today.”
