IMAX Denies Partnering with Asian Cinemas in Hyderabad

In a development that’s sparked debate among Hyderabad’s movie enthusiasts, IMAX Corporation has officially denied having any partnership with Asian Cinemas for launching an IMAX screen in the city. This clarification came after Asian Suniel, the head of Asian Cinema Group, mentioned in a recent promotional interview for their upcoming film Kuberaa that an IMAX screen was being planned under them near the Hakimpet area of Hyderabad. He also revealed plans for a 70-foot-plus screen, instantly creating a buzz among fans hungry for the IMAX experience.

The news went viral on social media, especially among Hyderabadis who have been eagerly waiting for the return of IMAX since the closure of the iconic Prasads IMAX in 2014. Fans rejoiced at the prospect of Hyderabad finally reclaiming its place on the IMAX map. The city has long been regarded as one of the most enthusiastic cinema hubs in the country, and the idea of a state-of-the-art IMAX returning to the city brought both nostalgia and anticipation to the forefront.

However, IMAX Corporation was quick to issue a clarification. Preetham Daniel, Vice President of IMAX Corporation India, posted on X (formerly Twitter):

Addressing the statement, Asian Suniel responded earlier today during a print media interaction, saying:

“It takes time to negotiate. We will decide in a few days. We are planning, it is not decided or signed. Just wanted to clarify.”

As things stand, there is no confirmed IMAX screen currently underway in Hyderabad, but both IMAX and local exhibitors appear open to making it happen. Whoever ultimately brings IMAX back to Hyderabad will be fulfilling the wish of one of India’s most passionate, loyal, and cinema-loving audiences. It won’t just be a business move, it will be the revival of a long-lost cinematic experience the city has been craving for over a decade.
