Aamir Khan Bets Big on South Filmmakers for His Comeback

The boundaries in Indian cinema are blurring faster than ever. Collaborations between Bollywood and South Indian filmmakers have become the norm rather than the exception. Be it Shah Rukh Khan’s ₹1000 crore blockbuster Jawan with Atlee or Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the trend is reshaping the industry. Even Salman Khan tested waters with AR Murugadoss for Sikandar, though the result fell short of expectations.

Interestingly, one name that stayed away from this wave for a while was Aamir Khan. Despite having worked with South directors like Ram Gopal Varma (Rangeela) and AR Murugadoss (Ghajini) much before the “Pan-India” phenomenon took shape, Aamir had been cautious in this space in recent years. That, however, seems set to change.

During the promotions of Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan confirmed his next big association – a superhero action film with acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, Lokesh has Coolie and Kaithi 2 on his plate before he can begin Aamir’s project. Meanwhile, there’s more happening behind the scenes.

Sources indicate that Aamir has given the nod for another project with a leading South filmmaker – Telugu director Vamsi Paidipally. Known for his successful family entertainers like Maharshi and Varisu, Paidipally is reportedly stepping into new territory with a social commentary film. Aamir, known for blending entertainment with substance, is seen as an ideal choice for this genre. Long-time collaborator Dil Raju will bankroll the project, marking a significant move in his Hindi production journey.

Additionally, Aamir will be seen in a cameo in Coolie, Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated film, slated for release on August 14. While Sitaare Zameen Par earned a decent response, it didn’t match Aamir Khan’s usual box office impact. With his upcoming collaborations, he seems determined to reclaim his place in the spotlight, this time, with South India as an integral part of his journey.
