On Friday, a civil court in Bengaluru passed an ex parte interim injunction order restraining actor Kamal Haasan from making further statements about the Kannada language in any form. The order restrains Kamal from sharing, posting, writing, or publishing any statement claiming linguistic superiority, which could defame the Kannada language, literature, land, and culture in any form.
The court passed this interim order upon hearing the petition filed by Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Mahesh. The petitioner requested the court to pass an order restraining Kamal from making any statements against the Kannada language and culture. After passing the interim order, the court postponed the next hearing to August 30. It ordered Kamal Haasan to appear for that hearing.
During the promotions of his recent film Thug Life, Kamal Haasan stated that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. His statements didn’t go well with the people of Karnataka, who banned the release of Thug Life in the state. Later, Kamal said that his statements were misinterpreted and misunderstood. After a series of hearings, the Supreme Court passed an order to release the film in Karnataka, but by the time, the damage had already been done already and Thug Life ended up as a disaster at the box office across the world.
After its theatrical failure, Thug Life premiered on Netflix a few days ago. Directed by Mani Ratnam, this gangster drama features Simbu, Trisha, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Aishwarya Lekhsmi and Nasser in other pivotal roles.
