Indian cinema has witnessed many unexpected hits over the years, but nothing comes close to the surprise created by Mahavatar Narasimha. At a time when the animation genre is considered a risky bet in India, this regional film has gone on to become a record-breaking blockbuster.
What started as a modest release soon transformed into a nationwide phenomenon. The film first shocked trade analysts by crossing the ₹100 crore mark, and before the industry could digest that, it powered past ₹200 crore. Now, it is eyeing the once-unthinkable milestone of ₹300 crore worldwide.
Interestingly, its box office journey looked almost finished after two weeks, especially with major pan-India films like War 2 and Coolie entering theatres during the Independence Day weekend. But when those films failed to click, Mahavatar Narasimha reclaimed its space, regaining screens and shows. Even in its fourth weekend, the film is running with houseful boards in many centres, proving its strong audience connect.
The Hindi version alone has grossed over ₹170 crore, while the Telugu version is heading towards ₹50 crore, making it a rare success story for an animation film. Packed shows on Sundays and consistent weekday footfalls clearly show that the craze is far from over.
From being released without sky-high expectations to rewriting box office history, Mahavatar Narasimha has redefined the potential of Indian animation cinema. With momentum still on its side, the film looks set to achieve milestones that once seemed impossible.
