The Karnataka state government today issued the notification capping cinema ticket prices at Rs 200 (plus GST) across all theaters, including multiplexes across the state. The rule, which is being widely appreciated by the citizens, was drafted to ensure movie going is more affordable for the people.
The latest order is part of the newly amended Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025. The price cap includes all tickets for movies in all languages in all single screens and multiplexes.
However, here’s an interesting twist. The price cap will apply across all single screens and multiplexes, except for multi-screen cinemas offering premium facilities with less than 75 seats. Earlier this year, the Karnataka government had issued a draft notification, allowing the citizens to submit their objections and suggestions regarding the new rule.
The newly amended rule has been confirmed after reviewing people’s reactions. The new regulation will come into effect from the date of its final publication in the Official Gazette. A similar attempt to reduce movie ticket prices was made in 2017. However, the Karnataka High Court had stayed the plan.
The Kannada film industry has long been urging the government to reduce ticket prices and safeguard Kannada films, which are often overshadowed by higher-priced non-Kannada films in multiplexes.
However, it will be interesting to see if the upcoming Kannada biggies such as Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 and Yash’s Toxic can match the box office collection of Kantara and KGF franchise once the reduced ticket rates are implemented across the state.
