Janhvi Kapoor’s Homebound Chosen as India’s Official Entry for Oscars 2026

Every year, India chooses one film to represent the country at the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The decision usually comes after looking at films from different languages and industries from Indian cinema.

On Friday, N Chandra, chairperson of the selection committee, announced in Kolkata that Neeraj Ghaywan’s Hindi film Homebound will be India’s official entry for the 2026 Oscars. Twenty-four films were considered. Chandra said it was a difficult choice because many films were meaningful and touched audiences.

Homebound is produced by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla. It stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor. The story is about two childhood friends from a small village in North India who dream of joining the police. They face obstacles because of caste and religion, but their friendship and determination keep them going.

The film has already made an impression internationally. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 and received a standing ovation. It also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it became second runner-up for the International People’s Choice Award.

Karan Johar said, “We are honoured that Homebound has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars. Neeraj Ghaywan’s film will reach hearts all over the world.” Director Neeraj Ghaywan added, “I am proud that Homebound will represent India at the Oscars. It tells a story about our people and our land, and taking it to the world is a great honour.”

Homebound will release in Indian theatres on September 26, 2025.
