Kantara Chapter 1, a prequel to the 2022 hit Kantara, released in theatres on Thursday. Before release, the film had a relatively low buzz due to limited promotions and modest advance bookings.
However, once it opened, positive word of mouth gave the film a strong push at the box office. On ticketing platform BookMyShow, advance bookings stood at about 8 lakh tickets before release day. But on Thursday itself, the film surprised with 1.28 million tickets sold, which is close to 13 lakh.
BookMyShow began publicly sharing ticket sales data in August 2023. Since then, only four films have crossed the one-million mark on release day. Pushpa 2: The Rule leads with 1.75 million tickets sold, followed by Kantara Chapter 1 at 1.28 million, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan at 1.14 million, and Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD at 1.12 million.
Early Friday trends suggest the film may cross another million tickets on its second day, with around 70,000 tickets being sold every hour.
Kantara Chapter 1 stars Rishab Shetty, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah. The film is directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films.
