Whenever a big-ticket Bollywood film releases, the topic about ‘Corporate Bookings’ often makes headlines in the media nowadays. Despite so much debate about this controversial practice, no one from the film industry has ever spoken about it in the public so far.
Even though critics often called out Bollywood sources for resorting to this artificial practice to create a false buzz among moviegoers, the trend never really stopped as many recent films experienced temporary boost in ticket sales with the help of this ugly technique.
Now, renowned Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar openly admitted how many producers are a part of this trend and also criticised them for spoiling the industry’s image with such practices by splurging their own money and buying tickets.
Karan opined that corporate bookings will have little impact on audiences or a film’s reputation. During a recent conversation for a podcast, Karan addressed the controversial trend in a candid manner and blamed the industry people for undermining the performance of the film through these unethical practices.
Karan further lamented on how another new concept called ‘Self-booking’ has evolved in recent times. He added that self booking is being used for giving a kickstart energy to films in the initial days, but will not help in giving a lasting appeal. He said that all these trends like corporate bookings and self bookings will inflate the box office numbers but doesn’t fool the audiences or help the film’s legacy. He asserted that moviegoers will look at whether the film is good or bad despite all these strategies.
