Tamil Film Industry Erupts Over Gouri Kishan Body-Shaming Controversy

Actress Gouri G Kishan, best known for 96, made headlines this week after a journalist asked an inappropriate question about her weight during a press meet for her new film Others in Chennai.

The incident took place when a reporter asked Gouri’s co-star Aditya Madhavan about lifting her in a scene from the film and casually inquired about her weight. Gouri immediately stepped in, questioning the relevance of such a personal remark at a professional event. She calmly pointed out that the question reflected body-shaming and disrespect towards women in the industry.

As the video from the event spread online, it triggered sharp criticism across social media. Several celebrities and film industry members came forward to support Gouri and condemned the journalist’s behaviour.

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada praised Gouri for standing her ground and said it was refreshing to see a young actress call out disrespect openly. Actor Kavin described Gouri as “inspiring,” while Khushbu Sundar said that such questions reveal how journalism has lost its sensitivity. “A woman’s weight is none of anyone’s business. Kudos to Gouri for giving it back,” she wrote.

Actors Richa Chadha, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Jwala Gutta, and filmmaker Pa Ranjith also expressed solidarity with Gouri. Composer Santhosh Narayanan termed the journalist’s behaviour “deplorable” and said such actions reflect deeper issues of misogyny in the system.

Responding to the controversy, Gouri said she was disappointed that questions about her role or the film took a backseat to body-related comments. “I was the only woman in the room, and I was targeted. It’s unfortunate,” she said.

The Chennai Press Club later condemned the journalist’s conduct and backed Gouri for standing up against body-shaming. Directed by Abin Hariharan, Others features Gouri as Dr. Madhumitha, with Aditya Madhavan playing the male lead. The film released on November 7.
