Remakes once ruled Tollywood. Producers saw them as a safe investment, and stars often relied on them to deliver sure-shot hits. Films remade from Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi industries found easy acceptance among Telugu audiences for years.
But the situation has changed drastically in recent times. The post-pandemic boom of OTT platforms has made audiences familiar with films from all languages. Audiences now watch originals directly, reducing curiosity around remakes. As a result, the success rate of remade films has dropped sharply.
Even big stars couldn’t escape this trend. In the last few years, actors like Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, and Pawan Kalyan featured in a few remakes that didn’t do well commercially. But now, none of them have remakes in their upcoming lineup. This marks a clear shift in how leading actors are planning their projects.
Interestingly, even mid-range heroes who once showed interest in remakes are moving away from them. The audience mindset has changed to the point where, even without watching the original, they are unwilling to spend time on a known story.
Industry circles see this as a positive development. The decline of remakes gives more space for original writers and directors to bring new concepts. It also helps the industry evolve creatively instead of repeating familiar narratives.
With stars and producers now focusing on original content, Tollywood seems to be heading in a refreshing direction. If this continues, Telugu cinema will pave the way for new-age storytelling rooted in originality.
