Keerthy Suresh’s new film Revolver Rita hit the screens today, but most regular moviegoers did not even realize it released. Even though this is a dubbed Tamil film, the makers expected at least a basic opening because familiar faces like Radhika Sarathkumar, Sunil, and John Vijay were part of the cast. Keerthy even came to Hyderabad and did interviews hoping to generate some attention. A random question about Chiranjeevi asked during one interview created a small moment online, but even that did not help the film gain momentum.
Trade reports say that while a few shows ran in Hyderabad, many centers saw almost zero occupancy. The buzz was so low that the release went unnoticed in several areas.
Revolver Rita is meant to be a dark comedy thriller, but there is nothing new in the narrative. It instantly brings back memories of previous films like Coco Kokila and Keeda Kola. The core storyline is extremely simple: a mother and daughter accidentally kill a local don who enters their house. What follows is a series of chaotic attempts to hide the body, escape from the gangster’s son, dodge the police, and survive the consequences. The film packs in a lot of elements, but none of them feel convincing. It is like trying to cook biryani without the essential ingredients the result is bland and forgettable.
The screenplay feels repetitive and tiring, turning the film into a perfect example of how not to write a dark comedy. Watching Keerthy Suresh, who once delivered remarkable performances in films like Mahanati, stuck in such an underwhelming role is disappointing. Most of her recent title roles have unfortunately ended as box office failures Miss India, Penguin, Good Luck Sakhi and now this film joins that list. Even her attempt to make a mark in Bollywood with Baby John did not work in her favor.
For an actress with her talent, Revolver Rita feels like another missed opportunity.
