CPI leader Narayana triggered debate with his latest comments on the arrest of Immadi Ravi, who is accused of running the popular piracy site iBomma. Speaking to the media, Narayana said the focus should not only be on arresting one person but on correcting the system that pushes people towards such activities.
Narayana said that Ravi is a talented youngster who ended up in piracy because of the failures within the system. According to him, even if authorities punish Ravi, more people will enter the same space because the root problems remain unsolved.
His comments became more controversial when he openly stated that he had also watched movies on iBomma. Narayana said that the high cinema ticket rates leave many people with no choice. He questioned how common people are expected to watch movies when ticket prices reach six or seven hundred rupees.
Narayana also criticised what he called the cinema mafia. He said the film industry spends crores on movies but expects the public to bear the burden by paying heavy ticket prices. He argued that instead of targeting Ravi, the government should first look into the high pricing and the influence of this cinema mafia on the system.
Narayana ended by saying that unless these systemic issues are resolved, more people like Ravi will continue to appear, and piracy will not stop by punishing one individual.
