When Color Photo released directly on OTT, it surprised everyone with the response it received. Though the love story itself was not new, the honest way it was told connected strongly with audiences. The film earned praise, good viewership, and even went on to win a National Award. It also brought director Sandeep Raj into the spotlight as a promising new talent.
After such a strong start, expectations naturally rise. When a director takes a five year gap after a hit like that, people expect something bigger. Unfortunately, Mowgli seems to be heading in a disappointing direction. Despite Roshan Kanakala putting in effort in his second film, the box office numbers suggest the film is failing to attract audiences.
Looking back at Sandeep Raj’s journey after Color Photo, it feels scattered. Instead of focusing fully on direction, he appeared in a few films in negative roles and also worked on a web series. Some dialogues from that series triggered controversy online, forcing the makers to remove a scene due to backlash. Just before Mowgli’s release, Sandeep Raj shared emotional post that made people believe something powerful was coming. But very few expected the film to rely heavily on a reworked old idea.
In cinema, one hit is only the beginning. The real challenge is building on that success. Sandeep Reddy Vanga struggled a lot during Arjun Reddy but kept pushing forward and is now handling massive projects. On the other hand, some directors who worked with same hero failed to expand their market despite early success due to poor choices. Talent alone is not enough. Direction and consistency matter just as much.
Sandeep Raj was given a strong opportunity by a reputed production house, but he could not fully make use of it. He once said Mowgli would work like a visiting card for everyone involved. Sadly, it now looks like the film may end up hurting his own momentum instead. In today’s competitive industry, one wrong step after a big success can cost much more than expected.
