Karthi’s upcoming film Vaa Vaathiyaar/Annagaru Vostaru continues to face release hurdles, as the Supreme Court has refused to lift the stay imposed on the film’s theatrical release. The decision has added to the uncertainty surrounding the project, which was earlier expected to release in December.
Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy and produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under the Studio Green banner, Vaa Vaathiyaar was initially slated to hit theatres on December 12. However, the release was postponed at the last moment after the Madras High Court passed an interim order putting a stay on the film.
The issue is linked to a financial dispute involving producer KE Gnanavel Raja and businessman K Arjunlal Sunderdas, who has since been declared insolvent. A court-appointed official managing Sunderdas’ assets filed a petition in the Madras High Court, seeking a ban on the film’s release until the pending loan amount, along with interest, was repaid. Accepting the plea, the High Court directed the producer to clear dues amounting to approximately Rs 21.78 crore and ordered that the film should not be released until the amount was settled.
Challenging this order, Studio Green approached the Supreme Court seeking relief. However, a bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kumar dismissed the appeal, stating that it was not inclined to interfere with the Madras High Court’s ruling. As a result, the stay on Vaa Vaathiyaar continues. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has reserved its order in the matter until December 27.
Earlier reports suggested that the makers were considering December 24 as a possible release date, coinciding with the death anniversary of legendary actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. Following the Supreme Court’s verdict, a December release now appears unlikely.
Vaa Vaathiyaar marks the first collaboration between Karthi and director Nalan Kumarasamy, best known for Soodhu Kavvum and Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum. The film stars Krithi Shetty as the female lead, with Rajkiran, Sathyaraj, Anandaraj, Karunakaran, and others in key roles. Music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan. With legal issues still unresolved, the film’s release remains on hold.
