Kollywood witnessed one of the most tumultuous festival seasons this Pongal because three notable films were mired in censor and legal controversies. What was supposed to be a bumper box office week with the release of Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan has now turned out be a dull affair.
While Jana Nayagan didn’t make it to screens due to legal complications, Parasakthi and Vaa Vaathiyaar, which released after last minute hurdles, failed to secure positive reports from moviegoers. The only box office spark arrived in the form of actor Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, which was the last Pongal release to hit the screens.
Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil opened to promising reports and took a decent start at the box office in Tamil Nadu. The hourly advance sales have picked up well taking advantage of the festival season and also the online ratings are fairly better than other movies.
Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi was the first choice for moviegoers after Jana Nayagan got postponed. However, the film did not sustain after decent openings due to mixed reports.
Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar also created good buzz before release, but repeated postponements detailed the box office prospects and poor reports further impacted the revenues despite festival advantage.
TTT is now slowly gaining momentum due to positive reports and encouraging word of mouth. The chaotic comedy and breezy performances helped the film secure positive response from moviegoers. Trade experts believe that the film will take lead at the box office during the weekend among all festival releases.
It all depends how these films perform after the festival weekend as the real test starts from next Monday.
