Watch: Gulte Pro In Conversation With Dhandora Director

As Dhandora is gaining fresh attention after its OTT release on Prime Video, director Muralikanth Devasoth spoke to Gulte Pro about the idea behind the film, its message, and the real incidents that shaped the story.

Talking about the soul of Dhandora, Muralikanth said the film is strongly influenced by Dr B R Ambedkar’s thoughts on caste. He highlighted a key dialogue spoken by a journalist in the film, which explains how people feel protected by their caste until the same group turns against them. According to the director, caste is not just about work division but about controlling people, where everyone tries to dominate someone else to survive in the system.

He explained that the film focuses on how oppression keeps repeating itself. Even those who suffer often end up doing the same to others below them. His aim was to show this cycle in a realistic way, without making it feel routine or preachy.

Muralikanth also revealed that some disturbing scenes in the film are based on real life. One such moment, where a dead body is lowered from a bridge, was inspired by an actual incident in which a community was not allowed to carry a body through a village road after a temple was built on the path.

Speaking about the rise of films dealing with caste issues, the director said Dhandora looks beyond the usual oppressor versus oppressed angle. Instead, it tries to show how politics and internal divisions keep the system alive.

He felt the film’s arrival on OTT is happening at the right time, as more viewers are discovering it and trying to understand its deeper layers. Though he prefers direct interaction, he said these conversations are important now.

On his next project, Muralikanth said the response to Dhandora has been a learning experience. He confirmed that work on a new script is already in progress and promised another rooted and meaningful story soon.
