At an age when most filmmakers prefer to stay away from active cinema, legendary Malayalam director Adoor Gopalakrishnan has decided to return behind the camera at 84. His comeback itself has become a major talking point in Mollywood. What makes it even more special is that he is reuniting with Mammootty who is 74 year old, one of the finest actors the industry has ever produced.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Mammootty last worked together 32 years ago in the critically acclaimed film Vidheyan. That film is still remembered as a landmark in Malayalam cinema. After many years of silence, Adoor is now ready to direct a new film titled Padyatra, marking his return to filmmaking at an advanced age.
The film is being produced under Mammootty Company, the actor’s own production banner. Mammootty has recently surprised audiences by choosing bold roles, including playing a psycho killer in his previous film. With Padyatra, expectations are high, not because of commercial hype, but because of the creative legacy involved.
Though the title Padyatra reminds Telugu audiences of Mammootty’s earlier film Yatra, this Malayalam project is not connected to it in any way. Still, the title has drawn attention from Telugu viewers as well.
Cinema lovers are now keen to see whether this film will be Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s final statement as a director. At 84, his decision to make another film reflects his undying passion for storytelling.
