Bollywood box office has hit a purple patch in the last few months. After delivering the biggest blockbuster of 2025 in the form of Dhurandhar, which clocked over 1300 Crores gross worldwide, this year started on a solid note with the latest release ‘Border 2’ taking a phenomenal opening on Friday.
Riding high on the sequel factor and also the stupendous success of Sunny Deol’s previous blockbuster Gaddar 2, the war drama Border 2 embarked on a record breaking start at the box office with nearly 30 Crores net on the first day. This is a bigger opening than Dhurandhar which started off with 28.6 Crores opening on December 5th.
Taking advantage of the Friday holiday in certain North Indian states, Border 2 registered solid footfalls and earned massive numbers despite not getting unanimous reviews and word of mouth due to some narrative and technical flaws in the film. Though Border 2 fell way short of the opening day figures of Gaddar 2, trade circles label it as a sensational opening for a sequel film.
Border 2 sold over 4 lakh tickets before its release and received strong user ratings from moviegoers in online ticket portals which hint that a strong weekend is loading for the film. The theatrical trailer received an impressive buzz and generated huge anticipation for the film. Also the fact that there is no other significant release apart from Dhurandhar helped Border 2 is taking a promising start.
While the response from Bollywood audiences and critics is decent and encouraging, the film managed only mixed reactions from South moviegoers. There are complaints about tacky VFX effects and lack of strong emotional depth in the narrative.
Nevertheless, if Border 2 manages to click with Hindi fans, there are strong chances that it will keep the cash registers ringing in the next few weeks and create a sense of nostalgia because of the impact created by the first part way back in the 90s.
Directed by Anurag Singh, Sunny Deol returns as the lead protagonist, with an ensemble cast that includes co-leads Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. The film also features Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Anya Singh, and Medha Rana in pivotal roles.
