There seems to be no legal respite in the near future for Tamil star Thalapathy Vijay’s last film Jana Nayagan, which was caught in a censor row just before the original release date on January 9th. After the Supreme Court refused to intervene, the case is back in the Madras High Court for hearing before the Division Bench.
Today, a Division Bench of High Court led by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan allowed a writ appeal filed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and set aside a single judge’s January 9th order which had directed the board to issue U/A certificate.
The Bench has now ordered a fresh consideration of the case for not giving reasonable opportunity to the censor board to file a counter affidavit. This is another big setback for Vijay and his producers as the chances for the film’s release in February appear bleak because the CBFC will definitely approach the Supreme Court even if the Single Bench gives judgement against it.
If the film misses February, the only option available for the production house is to release it after the general assembly elections of Tamil Nadu, which are likely to take place in mid Summer. In March, Yash’s Toxic which is produced by the same banner is set for a massive release all over India including Tamil Nadu and the model code of conduct will also come into force once the schedule is announced by the commission.
So, it seems like KVN Productions will find it very difficult to release the film before Vijay takes a plunge into full time politics due to the ongoing legal battle and the upcoming election schedule.
Though the team had applied for certification in December 2025 and complied with modifications suggested by the CBFC’s examining committee, the film was referred to a Revising Committee after a complaint about content that allegedly hurt religious sentiments and portrayed the armed forces in a demeaning manner.
A H Vinoth directorial, Jana Nayagan also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju, along with Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani.
