Finally, Jai Bhim Gets Real Credits!

Whenever the National Film Awards are announced, debates are inevitable. Discussions erupt over which film was ignored and which actor truly deserved recognition. In 2021, many felt that one film in particular was unfairly overlooked at the national level: Jai Bhim.

Starring Suriya and directed by T J Gnanavel, the film was released directly on OTT and received extraordinary acclaim. Based on real life events, it told the powerful story of a lawyer fighting for justice for a tribal family after a man dies in police custody following a false case. The gripping narrative, hard hitting emotions, and sincere performances struck a deep chord with audiences.

Suriya delivered one of the finest performances of his career, while Lijomol Jose and Manikandan brought remarkable authenticity to their roles. Many expected Jai Bhim to win Best Film at the National Awards, along with several other honors. However, when the awards were announced, the film did not receive a single recognition. The outcome sparked criticism across the film fraternity and on social media. Actor Nani was among those who openly expressed disappointment over the film being ignored. Some discussions also suggested that the film’s perceived political undertones may have influenced the decision.

Now, in what many see as long overdue recognition, the Tamil Nadu government has showered the film with major honors. Announcing state awards collectively for the years 2016 to 2022, the government gave Jai Bhim a grand acknowledgment for the year 2021.

The film won seven awards, the highest number received by any single film during this seven year period. It was named Best Film of 2021, while Lijomol Jose was awarded Best Actress. The film also secured awards for Best Villain, Best Supporting Actor, Best Music Director, and Best Playback Singer, among others.

In addition, Sai Pallavi, who was widely expected to win a National Award for her performance in Gargi in 2022 but missed out, was honored by the Tamil Nadu government. Over these seven years, leading actors such as Vijay Sethupathi, Karthi, Dhanush, Parthiban, Suriya, Arya, and Vikram Prabhu were recognized as Best Actors. Among actresses, Jyothika, Nayanthara, Keerthy Suresh, Manju Warrier, Aparna Balamurali, Lijomol Jose, and Sai Pallavi received top honors.

For many cinema lovers, this recognition finally gives Jai Bhim the real credits it was believed to deserve.
