India and Pakistan relations have been tense for several years. After the Pahalgam attack last year, the situation became even more strained. Since then, film exchanges between the two countries have almost stopped. Pakistani actors are not working in Indian films and Indian movies are not officially released in Pakistan.
However, that has not stopped Pakistani audiences from watching Bollywood films. Despite restrictions, many continue to access Hindi movies through online platforms and other sources.
What is surprising now is the massive craze for the film Dhurandhar. The movie is set against a Pakistan backdrop and portrays Pakistan as the main antagonist. Even though it was not released in Pakistani theatres, reports say the film was widely downloaded through piracy. The number of downloads is said to have crossed 20 lakh.
After its recent release on Netflix, Dhurandhar has reportedly become the number one trending film in Pakistan. This clearly shows the strong demand for Bollywood content there, regardless of political tensions or the film’s theme.
Interestingly, another Bollywood movie, Tere Ishk Me starring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon, is also trending in Pakistan and holds the second spot on Netflix.
The trend has sparked reactions on Indian social media. Many users are pointing out the irony of a film critical of Pakistan becoming such a big hit there. Once again, it proves that cinema can cross borders.
