Why Did Dhurandhar 2 Move Away From Netflix?

Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar – The Revenge, the second installment of his espionage thriller Dhurandhar, which created a box office mayhem after its release on December 5th last year, is getting ready for release on March 19th. As the first part emerged as one of the biggest hits of all time, the expectations on the sequel are quite staggering.

Interestingly, the makers have opted for a change in the OTT partner for the sequel and this is now a talking point in the media. According to the latest update, the streaming rights of Dhurandhar 2 are reportedly bagged by Jio Hotstar. Dhurandhar recently released on Netflix after the stipulated eight-week window was completed despite running with good occupancies.

As expected, the response for OTT streaming has been quite phenomenal. However, there has been considerable criticism aimed at Netflix for compromising on the quality and the content of the high-octane actioner. Moviegoers complained about poor visual quality and substandard soundscapes.

Many have slammed Netfix for not coming up with the high quality colour grading to match the hype on the film. Social media is flooded with several posts over these issues after the film started streaming a few days ago. Though it is unclear whether the shift in streaming partner is due to the backlash or other factors, the makers have decided to go with Jio Hotstar for the sequel.

Usually, OTT rights are awarded to highest bidders. Also, Jio Hotstar is one of the producers for Dhurandhar. So, the reason for handing over the rights of the first part to Netflix instead of Jio Hotstar are not known.

Moreover, there are mammoth expectations on the sequel and the OTT release will also have huge anticipation. So, the decision to release the second part through Jio Hotstar seems to have been taken in backdrop of all these reasons to make sure that there won’t be a similar situation when it screen on OTT after the theatrical release.
