As the first installment of The Kerala Story, which released in 2023, witnessed a soaring box office success despite numerous controversies and even after getting labelled as a propaganda film, the second part is usually expected to take a phenomenal start and perform better than the predecessor during the first weekend.
But, that is not the case with the The Kerala Story 2 which released last Friday after the intervention of the High Court despite widespread protests. The film took a slow start at the box office and shocked the trade circles as it is expected to take in strong openings given that the first part grossed over 300 Crores.
The Kerala Story 2 opened on a very disappointing note with 75 lakhs gross on the first day. Though there is a terrific jump on the second day with 4.65 Crores gross, the occupancies are shockingly very low in all territories. The first weekend is likely to see a moderate haul overall even though there is no competition from other films at the box office.
Usually, allegedly propaganda films gain massive patronage when the narrative strikes a chord with a particular section of supporters. That is how the first part turned out to be a runaway blockbuster at the box office. However, the second part seems to have failed to evoke a similar response.
Going by the moderate reception for the sequel, it appears like audiences are not falling for the trap and losing interest with these kind of stories which are now becoming repetitive and monotonous.
Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, the sequel to the 2023 film follows three young Indian women from different states who choose love over tradition, only to become trapped. Produced by Sunshine Pictures, The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond stars Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia, Aishwarya Ojha, Sumit Gahlawat, and Arjan Singh Aujla in key roles.
