No God or Goddess Names for Movie Titles – New Censor Rule?

A new debate has begun in the film industry. Should the names of gods and goddesses be avoided in movie titles going forward? The discussion gained momentum after the Censor Board reportedly asked the makers of Saraswathi, starring Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, to rename the film as S. Saraswathi. 

The sudden change has sparked conversations about religious sensitivities and certification norms. This is not an isolated case. Recently, the film Hey Bhagawan was also renamed as Hey Balwanth following similar concerns. 

Such last-minute title modifications can create confusion among audiences and result in additional promotional expenses for producers. With increasing scrutiny over film content and titles, many believe production houses should obtain Censor certification before launching promotions.

Announcing a film, designing posters, and building buzz around a title, only to change it later, leads to unnecessary financial loss and wasted effort. Going forward, securing approvals in advance appears to be the safest approach. 

It not only avoids controversy but also ensures smoother marketing and release plans without unexpected hurdles. In the days to come, one needs to see how other upcoming film changes its title or make due changes to avoid such issues.
