Is Tarun Bhascker Losing His Edge?

Director Tarun Bhascker has made only three films in a ten-year career. With Pelli Choopulu, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, and Keeda Cola, he carved out a unique identity. These may not have been films that changed the course of Tollywood, but they earned him solid respect as a filmmaker.

However, despite this promising track record, Tarun Bhascker has been leaning more toward acting, and that shift is starting to raise concerns. In fact, he seems to be making back-to-back mistakes in this phase. In the last three months alone, he has appeared in theaters twice as a solo lead.

His latest release, Gayapadda Simham, is struggling at the box office. Despite aggressive promotions both online and offline, the buzz isn’t translating into collections. Even the weekend numbers have been underwhelming, which is disappointing from the producers’ point of view.

The core issue appears to be that Tarun Bhascker does not yet have a strong image or market as a lead actor. There isn’t a dedicated audience base eager to watch him in that role. In such a scenario, taking up projects with sizeable budgets doesn’t just risk failure, it can also lead to long-term damage.

While Gayapadda Simham is still holding on to some extent, his earlier outing, Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi, performed even worse. These back-to-back flops are gradually affecting his credibility, which he had carefully built over the years as a filmmaker. This trend could also reflect negatively on his upcoming directorial ventures, including Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi 2.

Tarun Bhascker doesn’t need to follow that commercial template, but he does need to recognize where his true strengths lie. He should be more cautious about taking on lead acting roles, especially at this stage, and focus on rebuilding momentum as a director.
