Rajamouli Should Not Let a Vacuum Build for Varanasi

Visionary filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s globe-trotting action adventure ‘Varanasi’ is undoubtedly the next highly anticipated movie from Indian shores and the box office milestones will be much bigger this time because of the mammoth expectations. And he seems to be very much up to the task as the mind-numbing title glimpse has proved why he is called the master craftsman.

The Mahesh Babu starrer is less than a year for a grand global release. But, there is no single update from the makers after the announcement of official release date earlier this year. It has been more than six months since the team unveiled the first glimpse of the film amid huge fan fare and international media presence. Since then, there is absolutely no major update on Varanasi.

It is true that Rajamouli is a strategist like no other. He knows the pulse of audiences and how to promote his films before release. But, the prolonged silence for a behemoth like Varanasi is creating a big vacuum between moviegoers and the movie itself. As the release is just 11 months away, the team should at least plan to release some content to create hype well in advance.

Varanasi is aiming for an International release in multiple languages with ambitious box office targets. So, it requires more hype than Rajamouli’s previous outings and well planned marketing strategies.

But, content will always be driving factor for big-ticket films beyond any other aspect. Hence, Rajamouli and team should plan to unveil some exciting content to build more anticipation than what it commands now.

Mahesh Babu is believed to portray multiple roles including Rudra, Lord Rama, and others in the world-spanning mythological epic. Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Prakash Raj play significant roles. The first look posters of all these leading actors were unveiled in the run up to title glimpse last year.

Varanasi is slated for release on April 7, 2027.
