No Uncut Version Of Obsession Even On OTT In India?

The upcoming OTT release of Obsession in India will not feature an uncut version, as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly mandated that the same censored version currently screening in theatres be made available on streaming platforms.

According to reports, the Examining Committee (EC) of the CBFC determined that several explicit and violent sequences in the film were unsuitable for Indian audiences. As a result, the filmmakers were instructed to trim certain scenes before the movie could receive certification for release.

The edited theatrical version is now set to become the only version legally available to viewers in India, including on OTT services. The decision has reportedly disappointed Universal Pictures, which was hoping to release the film’s original version on digital platforms.

The move has also reignited debates surrounding censorship and audience freedom in the country. Critics of the decision argue that if a film has already been granted an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate, adult viewers should have the right to watch the filmmaker’s intended version, whether in cinemas or at home.

Supporters of stricter regulation, however, maintain that content standards are necessary to balance creative expression with cultural sensitivities. The controversy once again raises a familiar question: should certified adult audiences be trusted to decide what they watch, or should regulators continue to make that choice on their behalf?
