Kangana Suggests Reforms In Nurses Uniform

Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut’s Bharat Bhagya Vidhaata is set to release in theatres on June 12. Ahead of the film’s release, Ranaut said nurses lack respect and appreciation even though they play a crucial role in the healthcare system.

Ranaut plays the lead role in the film, inspired by the true story of Cama Hospital staff in Mumbai during the 26/11 terror attacks. Nurses, ward boys and hospital staff, who are the unsung heroes, are the basis of the story. Kangana portrays a staff nurse, an ordinary woman whose dedication and compassion go unrecognized, despite being involved in public service.

Speaking about the nurses, Ranaut lamented that nurses services go unnoticed in the hospitals. Nurses don’t get the dignity they deserve, she said.

They do a lot of important work, from making the beds, cleaning the patients and assisting doctors in examining the patients, apart from managing various other things for the smooth functioning of hospitals. She hoped that their film would encourage audience to rethink how they view the nursing profession.

On the dress code of nurses, she said that the current uniform reflects a foreign look, passed on from the British rule. It should be Indianised, based on the comfort and choices of the nurses, and the weather in the country, she felt.

Putting a pin, a cap or a belt on the uniform is an influence of the US Navy. It was like that during World War I and II. “Nurses are underpaid, overworked and they are most sexualized.”

On the origin of the title of the film, she said that it was coined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2025. Just as he named the specially-abled as Divyangjan, workers making things with their hands as Vishwakarma, he named the labourers as Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, she added.
