Bollywood Audiences Preferring Comedy Over Content?

Bollywood has been churning out biggies one after the other, but only a few have clicked at the box office. If you look at the recent hits, most comedy films have worked well at the box office. One of the most hyped films, Alpha, hit the screens with a lot of expectations, but it bombed at the box office.

More than the negative word of mouth, the Alia Bhatt and Sharvari starrer was trolled heavily for its silly narration and odd execution. On the other hand, films like Welcome to the Jungle and Dhamaal 4, which also have similarly silly narratives, have clicked big time at the box office.

Welcome to the Jungle made Rs 180 crore, and Dhamaal 4 has taken a solid start at the box office. This clearly shows that the audience is not overly concerned about the story and is primarily interested in entertainment. Since the above-mentioned films delivered that entertainment, they ended up as smash hits.

Another aspect of Alpha’s failure was its concept. Spy dramas are becoming a dated genre these days, and after watching Dhurandhar, audiences expect the same level of intensity. When Alpha failed to deliver that, it ended up as a flop.

Dhamaal 4 and Welcome to the Jungle featured major stars, and right from the release of their trailers, audiences knew the films would offer pure entertainment rather than logic, and they embraced them wholeheartedly.

Next in line are Maatrubhumi and Ramayana, the biggie featuring Ranbir Kapoor, and it remains to be seen how these films fares at the box office.
