Sandeep Reddy Vanga has been widely criticised in Bollywood for Animal. He openly stated that he and his film were targeted by a section in the Hindi film industry. Strangely, Ranbir Kapoor was praised, but Sandeep and Animal have faced sharp and bitter criticism even from the industry people.
Now, Animal and Sandeep have become topics again. This time, it is Kareena Kapoor, who has questioned the growing trend of violence-heavy films in Bollywood. Interestingly, Kareena is Ranbir’s relative. But she directly took Animal reference. Kareena said if a violent film becomes successful, the industry quickly starts thinking that violence is the next winning formula.
“Abhi violence chal rahi hai… Animal chal gayi toh chalo sab violence kar lete hai,” Kareena said. Calling it “Herd Mentality”, Kareena asked filmmakers to stop chasing formulas and start understanding what audiences actually want.
The point to be noted is that Animal became a massive box-office success and its impact on the Bollywood is hard to ignore. But many in the Hindi industry continue to target Sandeep and the violence in Animal. The hard work of Sandeep deserves better appreciation. The style and making of Sandeep has spinned Animal into an extraordinary cult film giving a huge blockbuster to Ranbir Kapoor and the Bollywood industry.
Another day, another B-town star targeted Vanga’s Animal. But they won’t speak the kind of success rate that the genre followed. Post Animal’s blockbuster success, the Hindi industry has attracted to violence, darker characters and aggressive storytelling. But how many films in this space have actually delivered similar results. That part of the discussion is rarely highlighted.
