Watch: Vishwak Sen Opens Up About Project X Influence On Cult

Actor and director Vishwak Sen sat down with Gulte Pro for an insightful conversation ahead of his upcoming release Cult. The filmmaker discussed the thought process behind the film, his fascination with survival thrillers and slashers, and the challenges of directing a film featuring a massive ensemble cast.

Vishwak revealed that Project X, one of his favourite films, played a significant role in shaping Cult. He was fascinated by the idea of a party spiralling out of control and initially wanted to explore a similar concept through a party thriller. The director said he had been developing this idea even before Squid Game arrived, and the Korean series later gave him confidence that audiences could connect with such unconventional storytelling.

The filmmaker admitted that he struggled to crack Cult’s second half for nearly two years. The breakthrough came after a friend returned from Vietnam and shared a real life incident that left a strong impression on him.

Vishwak said the incident helped him find the missing piece, and he completed the second half overnight. He also explained that the film explores what happens when privileged youngsters, who look down on others, find themselves trapped in a terrifying situation.

He also opened up about his interest in slasher films and how watching extreme violence on screen sometimes made him feel better about his own physical pain. He cited Project X and This Is the End among his favourites, while explaining that Cult is designed to make audiences experience the characters’ suffering rather than simply feel sympathy for them.

One of the biggest challenges was managing the enormous cast and staging scenes involving hundreds of people. Vishwak said he divided the performers into different zones and used a large monitor to ensure everyone remained visible in the frame.

Despite the film’s ambitious scale and expensive production, he claimed that wastage was limited to around three to four percent. With Cult, Vishwak aims to deliver an intense cinematic experience built on carefully planned visuals, layered characters and an unconventional survival thriller premise.
