Director and writer RJ Balaji teamed up with Nayanthara for Mookuthi Amman, a devotional fantasy comedy film, in 2020. Due to the COVID restrictions, the makers of the film decided to skip the theatrical release and release the film directly on OTT. It was released on Jio Hotstar and received a good reception from the audience. The producers of the film in 2025, roped in the director, Sundar C, to do a spiritual sequel to Mookuthi Amman, with Nayanthara in the lead role and Regena Cassandrra in the female antagonist role. Kannada hero, Duniya Vijay, played a male antagonist role in the film, while Urvashi, Yogi Babu, and Sunil, played crucial roles. Senior actresses, Khushbu Sundar and Sneha, played extended cameos in the film. After promoting the film for the last few weeks, the makers released the film in theatres today on the occasion of Diwali in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Did the director Sundar C, come up with an entertaining devotional fantasy action comedy film? Did the spiritual sequel, Mookuthi Amman 2, live up to the goodwill secured by its predecessor among the audience? Let’s figure it out with a detailed analysis.
What is it about?
2000 years ago, a ruthless witch, Bhaira(Regina Cassandra), intended to rule the world along with her lover, Ranadheeran(Duniya Vijay). But, during a face-off with the village deity, Mookuthi Amman(Nayanthara), Ranadheeran gets killed. The heartbroken Bhaira, enters her tomb alive and takes a vow to return when the next time the nine planets align in a single line, to destroy the Mookuthi Amman. Did, Bhaira, fulfil her wish to take revenge on Mookuthi Amman? Forms the rest of the story.
Performances:
Nayanthara and Regina Cassandra looked good on screen but there’s not much they can do with their performance in a poorly written film. At least, Nayanthara’s character stays calm but Regina Cassandra, got a character who screams all the time and it felt irritating after a point. The film had notable actors like Duniya Vijay, Urvashi, Yogi Babu, and Abhinaya, but almost everyone appeared uninterested and out of place. It is one of those films, where almost all actors delivered a lifeless performance.
Technicalities:
Just as actors, almost all the technical departments as well, delivered a lifeless and substandard output. Hiphop Tamizha’s music, Fenny Oliver’s editing, Gopi Amarnath’s cinematography, everything was substandard and outdated. Let’s discuss the writer and director, Sundar C’s, work in detail in the analysis section.
Positives:
1. Nothing
Negatives:
1. Everything About The Film
Analysis:
RJ Balaji made Mookuthi Amman in 2020 as a social satire. Although that film had devotional elements, the social satire element and a comedy quotient, were the two things, a majority of the audience liked in the film. When it was announced that the director, Sundar C, was going to make a spiritual sequel to Mookuthi Amman, it was expected that the film would be yet another social satire with a different backdrop along with the goddess Mookuthi Amman as the central character. Since Sundar C, is known for coming up with commercial comedy entertainers, the least the audience expected was a few comedy episodes and a few divinity-induced episodes. However, within a few minutes, we realise the film isn’t a social satire but a revenge drama set against the backdrop of reincarnation. There’s nothing wrong with making a revenge drama film but the manner in which it was narrated is TERRIBLE to say the least. Right from the start to end, everything what we see on screen appear loud, over the top and tests patience.
Ever watched a film where almost every scene was made using AI prompts? Mookuthi Amman 2, is one such film. It looked like the makers shot the entire film on a green mat and then prompted the AI agents to generate visuals. Especially, it appeared it he visuals for the entire flashback and climax episodes, were generated using AI. A majority of the visuals throughout the film were laughable. It was shocking to see a film with names like, Nayanthara, Sundar C and Vels Film International, taking the audience for granted. To be honest, even the films released twenty years ago with reincarnation elements, used to have better visual effects than what we get to see in Mookuthi Amman 2. Also, other than cashing in on the popularity of the title, Mookuthi Amman, it appears there’s no other reason for the makers to name the new film, Mookuthi Amman 2. There’s a sequence in the film where Nayantara and Duniya cross paths for the first time; they both feel a shocking wave through their bodies. Watched this sequence elsewhere? Yes, it is a straight rip-off from the Telugu blockbuster film, Magadheera. The film has many such unoriginal and unexciting ideas, which test your patience and make you go restless.
Although they are loud, mindless and over the top, Sundar C’s films usually offer a few genuinely laugh-out-loud moments. But in Mookuthi Amman 2, there was not even a single sequence that made the audience laugh. Imagine how poor the writing must be when actors like Yogi Babu and Urvashi also fail to generate laughs. There was an attempt to generate a few laughs through a lengthy episode during the pre-climax, but that entire episode makes you feel pity for yourself for stepping into the theatre to watch the film. It was also shocking to see an experienced director like Sundar C fail to come up with at least one sequence that makes you feel the divine aura in a two-hour film with three goddesses as central characters. The entire God vs Evil flashback episode and the climax, with their terrible visuals, make the audience feel pity for the director and his team for their lack of ideas and imagination.
Overall, Mookuthi Amman 2, is a terrible film where nothing worked out. The outdated narration and AI-prompted visuals, test your patience throughout its runtime. It definitely is not worth a watch in theatres and also is definitely not worth a watch when it releases on OTT. Stay away from this mindless, imaginationless and idea-less film.
Bottom line – Terrible
Rating – 1/5
