Railways to Introduce Airport-Style Luggage Weight Checks?

The Indian Railways is mulling to roll out stringent baggage rules for train passengers, just like the airlines. This means the passengers’ baggage would have to pass through the weight check.

As per the proposed rule, the railway passengers will have to get their luggage weighed by electronic machines. The scheme is likely to be rolled out at major railway stations, with strict enforcement of weight limits. In case, the passenger is found to be carrying more than the prescribed weight, they will have to shell out extra charges.

According to a report in the Times of india, the project would be first implemented at major railway stations within the NCR zone — Kanpur Central, Prayagraj Junction, Mirzapur, Tundla, Etawah and Aligarh Junction.

The baggage weight permit is as follows: Passengers in AC First Class can carry up to 70 kg, those in AC two-tier can go up to 50 kg. AC three-tier and passengers in sleeper class can carry up to 40 kg. Those travelling in the General class will have a limit of 35 kg.

Large bags blocking space on board may incur penalties, irrespective of their weight. The new rule is aimed at providing a comfortable travel experience to passengers traveling for long distances.
