Ajith Kumar’s action film Good Bad Ugly has returned to Netflix after being removed earlier this month. The film, released in theatres on April 10, had included songs by legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja, which later led to a legal dispute.
Good Bad Ugly started streaming on Netflix on May 8. It featured Ilaiyaraaja’s hit songs such as “Otta Ruba Tharen,” “En Jodi Manja Kuruvi,” and “Ilamai Idho Idho.” Ilaiyaraaja’s team sent a legal notice to the producers, claiming that the songs were used, altered and commercially exploited without permission or payment of royalties. The notice demanded Rs 5 crore in compensation, a written apology and the detailes of revenue earned from the songs.
Following this, Ilaiyaraaja filed a copyright infringement case in the Madras High Court. Justice N. Senthilkumar ruled that the film could not be streamed with the disputed tracks. This ruling led Netflix to remove Good Bad Ugly on September 17. The case emphasized the composer’s copyright and moral rights, showing that even popular songs from older films cannot be used without proper consent.
Now, the film is back on OTT platform, Netflix with changes. Ilaiyaraaja’s songs have been replaced with new background music. Key sequences, including Arjun Das’ entry and Ajith’s bar fight, have been edited with the new music.
Good Bad Ugly stars Ajith Kumar, Trisha, Prasanna, Arjun Das, Prabhu and Sunil. Directed by Adhik Ravichandran, with music and background score by GV Prakash Kumar.
