A deadly road accident shook Andhra Pradesh once again on the Kurnool Chittoor National Highway late Saturday night. A private Mythri Travels bus, carrying about 33 passengers from Hyderabad to Puducherry, had stopped on the roadside near Perayipalli Metta in Allagadda mandal after two passengers asked for a restroom break. It was around 12:30 AM, and everything seemed normal until a speeding lorry approached from behind.
The lorry driver failed to notice the halted bus and crashed straight into it with enormous force. The back portion of the bus was completely crushed in seconds. Two passengers, a young man and woman named Badarinath and Haritha, died instantly due to the severe impact. Eight other passengers were injured, and one of them was in critical condition and immediately shifted to Nandyal Government Hospital for treatment.
Police and emergency teams reached the spot quickly and rescued the passengers with the help of 108 ambulances. The lorry driver, who was stuck inside the smashed cabin, was also pulled out by the police and taken for medical care. The injured were shifted to Allagadda CHC and Nandyal hospitals.
Nandyal District SP Sunil Sheran visited the accident site as well as the hospitals soon after the incident. He interacted with the injured passengers, collected details about how the accident happened, and instructed the officials to ensure full support for the victims and their families. Police have started a complete investigation to find out why the lorry driver failed to notice the bus and what exactly led to the collision.
This tragedy comes barely a month after the horrific Kaveri bus accident in Rayalaseema. Early on a Friday morning in Chinnatekur, Kurnool, a Vemuri Kaveri bus caught fire, claiming the lives of 20 passengers from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Odisha, and Bihar. The fire was so intense that even identifying the bodies became extremely difficult.
With two major bus accidents in a short span, concerns about road safety and night travel conditions in the region are growing again.
