Jana Nayagan, starring Tamil Nadu CM Vijay, is facing an unprecedented situation even before its official release. During proceedings before the Madras High Court, Chennai Police informed the court that nearly 1.2 crore people had already watched the film after it was allegedly leaked online before receiving certification from the Central Board of Film Certification.
The revelation has sent shockwaves through the film industry. Justice C. Kumarappan reportedly dismissed the bail petitions of two of the 21 accused in the case after considering the submissions made by the prosecution. The incident has once again highlighted the growing threat of piracy and the financial damage it can cause to big-budget productions.
Despite the setback, trade circles believe Vijay’s immense popularity could still work in the film’s favor. The actor has consistently delivered massive openings over the years, and his final film carries extraordinary hype among fans. However, questions remain about the long-term box-office impact of the leak.
Another factor being discussed is the ongoing talk that Jana Nayagan is based on a remake. Combined with the alleged leak, this has created uncertainty regarding the film’s theatrical run beyond the opening days.
That said, if Vijay’s star power manages to pull huge crowds during the first week itself, the film could recover its costs quickly and emerge successful despite the challenges. All eyes are now on the opening collections, which could determine whether Jana Nayagan overcomes its setbacks and turns into a box-office triumph.
