Using E20 Petrol in Older Vehicles? Read This First

The debate over E20 petrol is back after the Centre clarified its stand in Parliament. The government says there is no evidence that E20 causes major engine damage or abnormal wear, even in older vehicles. According to studies by ARAI, SIAM, IOCL and other agencies, most cars and bikes can continue using E20 without engine modifications.

However, there is one important exception. Vehicles built before 2016, especially BS III models, may see faster wear in a few rubber components such as fuel hoses, seals and gaskets. These parts might need replacement during regular servicing, but the government says it is a simple and low cost repair rather than a major mechanical problem.

The Centre also admits that some older E10 designed vehicles may experience a small drop in fuel efficiency of around 3 to 5 percent with E20. On the other hand, it says the fuel offers cleaner combustion, lower emissions and helps reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil.

Consumer groups remain unconvinced and want more transparency, arguing that millions of older vehicle owners should be clearly informed about possible maintenance costs. While the government continues to defend E20 as safe after years of testing, the debate over its long term impact on older vehicles is far from over.
