A Bering Air flight carrying 10 passengers went missing on Thursday and was found to have crashed in Western Alaska. All 10 passengers onboard were killed. The wreckage of the flight which was en route to Noma was found on sea ice on Friday. Concerningly, this is the third major aviation mishap in the US in the last eight days.
According to the reports, The US Coast Guard located this small aircraft during their hunt on a helicopter. Immediately, rescue swimmers were deployed at the crash site.
Getting into the details, the flight took off from Unalakleet at 2:37 pm on February 6 (Thursday), with nine passengers and one pilot on board. In less than an hour of its journey, the plane lost its contact. Reportedly, there was little snow and fog with a temperature of around -8.3 degrees Celsius at the time of the incident. The aircraft went missing roughly 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Nome and was eventually found approximately 12 miles (19 km) from shore.
Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Benjamin McIntyre-Coble said that the flight experienced a strange moment where there was a rapid loss in speed and elevation, which might have resulted in the crash.
In the last eight days, there were two other major US flight accidents where an Army Helicopter met with an accident on January 29th, killing 29 people and a medical transportation plane crashed on January 31, resulting in the death of six people.
