Delhi Polls : BJP leads, Kejriwal and Atishi trail

The suspense over Delhi election results will end in a few more hours as the counting to 70 Assembly seats is underway. Early trends suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to secure the majority of seats and register a decisive victory as predicted by most of the exit polls. The elections to Delhi assembly were held on February 5th with a voter turnout of 60 percentage.

Due to many controversies surrounding the incumbent government including the arrest of Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and his close aide Manish Sisodia, these polls are being projected as a referendum against corruption allegations and other issues grappling the national capital. So, there has been a lot of anticipation for the election results.

After completion of counting of postal ballots and the first round of EVM votes, BJP is reportedly leading in more than 40 segments and poised to continue its dominance in the coming rounds going by the current trends. Surprisingly, prominent AAP leaders are trailing against their opponents in the first few rounds.

While former CM Arvind Kejriwal, contesting against BJP’s Parvesh Verma in New Delhi, is trailing. In Kalkaji, Chief Minister Atishi is trailing behind BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri. Former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia is trailing in Jangpura.

Several issues like Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence Seesh Mahal, poor quality of water in Yamuna, corruption allegations in connection with liquor policy and other issues have been the centre of the poll campaign in this fiercely fought election war between the BJP and the AAP. If BJP manages to come up trumps in this battle, it will be the first time in 27 years, they will claim the prestigious Delhi throne.
